French Crypto User Assaulted in Paris Suburb Over Ledger Wallet
A 23-year-old cryptocurrency holder was violently assaulted in Maisons-Alfort, a suburb of Paris, and forced to surrender both cash and access to his Ledger hardware wallet. The attackers demanded €5,000 ($5,760) along with the victim's private keys—a stark reminder of the physical risks tied to digital asset ownership.
This incident follows a global pattern of crypto-related kidnappings and extortion. In May, the family members of Paymium CEO Pierre Noizat were targeted in a similar attack. New York, India, Hong Kong, and Spain have also reported cases of criminals using physical coercion to steal cryptocurrencies.
Jameson Lopp, co-founder of Casa, has documented 232 such attacks over the past decade. The trend underscores the need for enhanced security measures beyond blockchain's cryptographic safeguards.
